A Whiter, Brighter Smile

Teeth whitening (or bleaching) is a simple, non-invasive dental treatment used to change the color of natural tooth enamel and is an ideal way to enhance the beauty of your smile.
Because having whiter teeth has now become the number one aesthetic concern of most patients, there are a number of ways to whiten teeth.

The most popular method is using a home tooth whitening system that will whiten teeth dramatically. Since tooth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc. Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Tooth whitening is not permanent. A touch-up may be needed every several years and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Zoom! Teeth Whitening

Zoom! whitening is our in office bleaching system, it’s safe, effective and very fast. In just under an hour, your teeth will be dramatically whiter. Zoom! whitening is ideal for anyone looking for immediate results. The convenience of Zoom! in comparison to days of wearing trays and gradual whitening makes it the perfect choice for the busy patient. With proper care and an occasional touch-up at home, your whiter smile will sparkle for years.

Internal Bleaching/Single Tooth Whitening

Discoloration of a single anterior tooth is often the result of trauma in which the inside of the tooth is injured or even dies. The injured and dead tissue causes discoloration from the inside out, in this situation at home whitening or Zoom! whitening will not work, the tooth must be bleached internally. Dr. Mooney uses a method known as “walking bleach” in which a special formulation of bleach is placed inside the tooth. The patient is then seen once a week for about three weeks, and the bleach is replaced at each visit. Internal bleaching is often the best solution for a single anterior tooth that has had trauma or prior root canal therapy.

Reasons for tooth whitening:
  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development)
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.)
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth
