Dental Checkups & Cleanings
The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist once every six months for a checkup and cleaning to keep your teeth and gums healthy. During these appointments, our experienced dental staff will capture X-rays of your mouth and Dr. Mooney will examine them. He’ll also conduct a visual examination of your teeth and gums in search of any signs of cavities or gum disease. If we spot anything, we’ll discuss our findings with you as well as some treatment options to restore your oral health. Finally, we’ll end the appointment with a thorough, professional cleaning and polishing. That way, you can leave our office feeling fresh and great!
Oral Cancer Screening
At each of your checkups and cleanings, we’ll also conduct an oral cancer screenings. These only take about five minutes, but for some patients, they can be life-saving. Dr. Mooney will thoroughly examine your oral cavity, throat, and lips for any signs of the disease, like red and white patches in your mouth. If we spot anything that’s out-of-the-ordinary, we’ll refer you for additional testing to make sure that you get the care you need.
Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral produced by rocks that your body uses to strengthen your tooth enamel, which is the outermost layer that protects your teeth from cavities. If you or your child don’t receive enough of it via tap water, fresh fruits and vegetables, or oral hygiene products, it could put you at a higher risk of decay. To help, we offer fluoride treatments. They’re fast, easy, and can be done at the end of your checkup and cleaning appointment.
Dental Sealants
If you or your child has deep grooves and pits in your molars that effectively grab onto and collect food debris and plaque, you may find yourself getting cavities, even if you brush and floss. To stop decay from forming and make brushing and flossing your teeth more effective, we offer dental sealants. These are clear shields that we brush over the biting surface of your molars to keep debris from building up on them. The process is short and completely painless, so you won’t need to sit in the treatment chair for any longer than necessary.
Athletic Mouthguards/ Sportsguards
Do you participate on a local or professional sports team? The most important piece of protective equipment that you should have on you is an athletic mouthguard. Without one, your jaw and teeth are at risk of becoming knocked-out, broken, or severely damaged due to trauma from a ball or another player. At Alamo Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we offer custom-fitted sportsguards that are comfortable to wear, easy to breathe with in your mouth, and provide maximized protection.
Nightguards for Bruxism
If you wake up with a sore jaw or frequently get migraines, you may have bruxism, or nightly teeth grinding and clenching. Without the proper protection, you may find yourself with a dental emergency on your hands. To protect your teeth from becoming worn-down, damaged, and even lost, we recommend one of our customized nightguards. These are made from a durable acrylic material to ease the force placed on your teeth and prevent any issues from arising.
